Improv Update Summer 2018

At a recent art reception and interview session for the Visual Artists’ Cooperative at the Cape Cod Community Media Center, I took a tour of their great television facilities.   Later I met with Kate McMahon, the new director of Special Projects and “Izzi” Isabelle Caplan, the Director of Communications. I told them I had an idea to bring improv to the Cape public access channel. They told me they held Summer TV workshop camps at the TV station.  They had the idea that we should work on adding an improv camp to the summer lineup.  We have since developed a plan.  I will be teaching the three day workshop July 30-Aug 1.

I am so excited to have a chance to bring this form of expression and fun to the kids, if we can just get the word out! Scholarships are available. The camp activities will include improv skits, character development, writing, comedy exercises, and short-form games. The kids (Grades 6-10) will learn the skills to work in the television studio where they will produce and perform on-camera programming, recorded and later broadcast on the channel 99 and website.

I grew up through the Chatham School System and loved the dramatic arts from an early age, playing Aunt Polly in “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” to many school plays, to being with Poda Meier and Bryce Eldredge at Monomoy Theater and the Chatham Drama Guild.  I even received a scholarship from the Guild.  Later, in L.A., I joined an improv group, directed scenes and acted.  I completed graduate studies in theater arts, TV productions and film.  I hope this Summer event will bring the students some of the joy, confidence, and creativity that improv instilled in me.

OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS FROM GRADES 6-10
